Many times, a group will require a new individual to participate in some kind of tradition or ceremony that marks their commitment to and acceptance by the group.

Around 1118 A.D., Hugues de Payens, a French knight, created a military order, along with eight relatives and acquaintances, who became known as the Knights Templar.
